Suicide can be an uncomfortable topic of conversation even with clients who have the higher risk factors for potential suicide. The way we phrase our questions regarding suicide can make a difference. The way we are listening to our clients regarding suicide can help us connect with their level of pain. Suicide is not about dying. It is, for the most part, about stopping the pain.
Bill Art is a licensed therapist with Madison Ave. Psychological Services. He has presented workshops on suicide and safety to numerous organizations, and in 2012 was a key note speaker at the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Summit which was the catalyst in starting the current Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition. He serves on the Suicide Prevention Subcommittee on the Governor’s Behavioral Health Services Prevention coalition.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the warning signs for suicide.
- Be skilled in talking and asking about suicide.
- Identify the risk and safety factors.
- Set up a safety plan for people in a suicidal crisis

Your Mental Health Tip
When speaking to another person, a simple means of demonstrating commitment in a difference is best shown by first stating what it is you wish or want, then asking the other person what they wish or want, and then reaming open to options toward a solution.
